Elemental Lord: [link] Song: Shattering of the World - Jeremy Soule ([link])
ARTIST NOTES:
Continuation of my "Elemental Lord" piece, linked above. I actually had this whole scene planned out in my head before I even started working it out in PS. And because of that, I think it translates better into an animation than it does in just a still-image.
With the exception of the sounds, all painting and animation was done from scratch. Like the "Aura of the Lich" animation, all the sounds were scavenged from sound-packs and then taken into audio programs to completely change how they sound.
I wanted a level of quality to the sounds that I couldn't get with my own microphone. To solve that, I would take different good-quality sound files, change their tempo & pitch, then mix them into one sound. This way, I could add my own personal touch to the sounds, rather than just pasting on un-edited stock SFX. So things like the staff, giant's shout/stomp, rocks, etc, all have anywhere between 4-7 various layers to give them my own unique SFX.
Also spent a good amount of time stereo mixing the sounds so that they reflected the area of space of where they're happening. Though this might be more apparent for people with stereos than tiny speakers.
The "be gone" line the ele says is me though. So, there's that I guess.
PROGRAMS USED: -Photoshop (painting) -After Affects (animation & fx) -Reaper/Audacity/Garage Band (recording and sound editing) -Flash (compiling/exporting the finished clip and audio)
Fantastic work! I love the choice of music and the sound production is every bit as creative and professional as the artwork. Any chance you'll ever tell a full story someday? Like maybe a 5 minute thing?
Keep up the great work man! You're always a great inspiration!
Thanks, Incognisance. Dunno if I'll ever do an animation that long, considering the amount of work and time that goes into something this short.
It took about two weeks alone just for the animation, not including the actual drawing of the image and additional sound recording. And that was only for something about eleven seconds long.
In an ideal world I'd like to do a sort of character story using the same animation style about a minute long, but that's something definitely on the backburner.
Have you ever tried 3d animation? It might be a lot more practical if you do it in 3d. With your patience and artistic skill, it won't be a problem for you to accomplish anything you imagine!
There's a free 3d modelling application called "Sculptris" that's similar to zbrush, but a lot simpler to use. Works fantastically with a tablet. There's also a very light but powerful 3d animation software called "Blender" that's also free. So you can experiment at no cost. But you may already have tried this.
Anyway, it's always good to see your work, no matter how short! So keep up the great inspirational work always!
Dunno how I feel about animating in 3D because that brings up the whole problem of rigging your models - something I'd probably hate as much as Action Scripting.
Speaking of Sculptris, I've been meaning to try it but I haven't had the time to. I planned on picking up 3D modeling this semester, but I ran out of time and am now just focusing on furthering my Photoshop Kung Fu.
The style of the sequence.
