Progress documentation.
1) Very rough sketch just to get something down on paper and develop from there. Not staying too committed to any one idea.
2) Developing the initial sketch more. Keeping it really loose and rough.
3) Re-working the initial idea one more time. Lowering the architecture in the background to give more breathing room and atmosphere. Also pushing the perspective more upwards to make it more dynamic.
4) Rough linework over the previous sketch. Capturing the general shapes and and energy in the figure and background.
5) Final linework. Not too detailed, but just enough to keep me from having to design everything mid-painting.
6) Initial color rough. Establishing the overall mood, contrast and color.
7) General detailing.
8) More detailing, fixes and color changes. Parts of the cloth are changed to give it more movement. Color and contrast of the background architecture is also cooled down and reduced to push it further back into space. This makes the characters in the foreground pop out more since they should be the main focus of the piece.
9) More detailing and cleanup, mainly on the clouds and architecture. Details and texture through brush marks are added to make the building more visually interesting, but the contrast is still kept to a minimum to keep it from becoming too distracting.
10) Final details and cleanup. Color overlay is added in the end. This is similar to when I would do washes with acrylic paint as I liked seeing how they change colors on the canvas overtime.
